Read the Weather with atmospheric scientist Cliff Mass
Join U.W. scientist Cliff Mass at Barn Beach Reserve Friday, July 31, 7:00 - 9:00 PM for a presentation de-mystifying the weather. You can also engage Cliff in informal conversation at his book signing Saturday Aug 1, 1:00 - 3:00 PM at A Book For All Seasons.
University of Washington atmospheric scientist and popular radio commentator Cliff Mass will unravel the intricacies of Northwest weather for us, from the mundane to the mystifying. The Pacific Northwest experiences the most varied and fascinating weather in the United States, including world-record winter snows, the strongest non-tropical storms in the nation, and shifts from desert to rain forest in a matter of miles. Cliff Mass' best-selling book The Weather of the Pacific Northwest is the first comprehensive and authoritative guide to Northwest weather that is directed to the general reader - helpful to boaters, hikers, and skiers and also valuable to expert meteorologists.

Where Am I?
The heat's easing off for the day, music is playing, kids are running barefoot in the grass, I smell artisan pizza baking, and a vendor is holding out just-picked organic fruit for me to sample - hey, I must be at the Leavenworth Thursday Farmer's Market! 4:00 - 8:00 PM every Thursday; what a wonderful, relaxing wind-down to Local's Thursday.
Never been to Thursday market? Wander by to meet friends, have a cold Italian soda, and wiggle your toes in the grass.
Loving the new market and wondering how you can support it? Become a member, fund the infrastructure, and elect the board. Staff the info booth for an hour. Or sport the T-shirt, available at the market or at A Book For All Seasons (all T-shirt proceeds support the market).

Royal Ambassador Wins Friends For Leavenworth
Leavenworth Autumn Leaf is working hard for you. Nothing else has quite the impact of the personal touch these ambassadors bring, shaking hands and greeting new friends all across the Northwest.
We must be doing something right, to have won the Governor's Award (best non-commercial float, Olympia), the Sweepstakes Award (best festival float, Portland), the President's Award (2nd place, Spokane), and many more 2009 awards on proud display at the bookstore.
"I have been traveling the Pacific Northwest waving up a storm along parade routes from British Columbia to Portland and most recently at SeaFair's Torchlight Parade, reports Royal Lady Pat. "No matter where we go, the crowd goes wild for Leavenworth. And the whole Autumn Leaf Association team work so hard to make this happen — they're fabulous."
Pat's whole family pitches in! In this photo from SeaFair's Torchlight Parade, Pat is joined by grand-daughter Francesca, visiting from New York this summer. Francesca chicken-danced for two miles beside our float in SeaFair, and proudly carried SeaFair's 2009 Workmanship Award back to
Leavenworth.
Your talents are needed too! Please consider joining or supporting the Autumn Leaf team. It takes a village to care for a village.

What are Leavenworth's Doctors Reading?
"I like to alternate reading fiction and nonfiction," says Dr. Geoff Richardson. Geoff's current read is Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. "Goodwin eloquently portrays Lincoln and his rise to the presidency in a captivating way," say Geoff. "Unlike a dry historical text, she is able to bring the reader to a more personal level with the 16th president. I have much more admiration for Lincoln now and wonder how he would respond to issues currently faced by President Obama's administration." The New York Times says Pulitzer Prize -winning "Goodwin's narrative abilities ... are on full display here, and she does an enthralling job." "Splendid, beautifully written," says the L.A. Times. "Endlessly absorbing ... lovingly rendered and masterfully fashioned," says the Wall Street Journal.
Buy Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin - $21.00
Dr. Maury Hafermann just finished Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. "Stegner is such a good writer," says Maury. "He really depicts how delicate and complex a thing a relationship is. This book has so much to say about life and friendships. It's a powerful, exquisitely written book." Published in 1987, Crossing to Safety is considered one of the great American novels of the twentieth century. Tracing the lives, loves, and aspirations of two couples who move between Vermont and Wisconsin, it is a work of quiet majesty, deep compassion, and powerful insight into the alchemy of friendship and marriage.
