The Storms of Denali: The Nature of Risk in Life and in Climbing by Nicholas O'Connell (Presentation) |
 |
In Nicholas O'Connell's novel of adventure, adversity, and ambition, four men set out to conquer Mt. Denali. Among the team members is John Walker, a family man trying to choose between domestic stability and mountaineering's uncertain glory. In the course of their ascent the group battles avalanches, fierce winds, and mind-numbing cold before their bond begins to splinter, leading inexorably to tragedy.
"It brought me into that dreamy state of imagining myself in John's boots...a parable about the price of ambition...brilliant, funny, and replete..." — Jonathan Waterman, author of In the Shadow of Denali and Running Dry

Christine and Jeffrey Smith found the David B tucked behind a breakwater on Lopez Island. The tired old wooden boat, built in 1929, was showing her age. Without much income, they pinned their hopes and sheer will on rebuilding the dying boat. What they thought would be a two-year project, became an eight-year tug-of-war between time and money as they raced to finish rebuilding the David B.

Creole Belle by James Lee Burke $27.99
Languishing in a recovery unit on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans, Dave Robicheaux is fighting an enemy more insidious than the one who put a bullet in his back a month earlier in a shootout on Bayou Teche. The morphine meant to dull his pain is steadily gnawing away at his resolve, playing tricks on his mind, and luring him back into the addict mentality that once threatened to destroy his life and family.
With the soporific Indian summer air wafting through the louvered shutters of his hospital room, and the demons fighting for space in his head, Dave can't be sure whether his latest visitor is flesh and blood or a spectral reminder of his Louisiana youth. Tee Jolie Melton, a young woman with a troubled past, glides to his bedside and leaves him with an iPod that plays the old country blues song "My Creole Belle."
What Dave doesn't know is that Tee Jolie disappeared weeks ago, and no one believes she reappeared to comfort an old man with a bullet wound. Dave becomes obsessed with the song and the vivid memory of Tee Jolie, and when he learns that her sister has turned up dead inside a block of ice floating in the Gulf, he believes that putting the evils of the past to rest is more urgent than ever before.
Meanwhile, an oil spill in the Gulf brings back intense feelings for Dave of losing his father to a rig explosion years ago. As the oil companies continue to risk human lives in pursuit of wealth and power, Dave begins to see links to the Melton sisters, even when no one else shares his suspicions. Dave's expartner Clete Purcel helps him search for Tee Jolie, though Clete fears for his friend's mental health and safety. But Clete has his own troubles, too; he's discovered an illegitimate daughter who may be working as a contract killer—and may have set her sights on someone he loves.
Creole Belle is a resurrection story for the ages, with James Lee Burke at the peak of his masterful career and Dave Robicheaux facing his most intense and personal battle yet, against the known and unknown forces that corrupt and destroy even the best of men.
"This is another stunner from a modern master." — Publishers Weekly
"Burke is the reigning champ of nostalgia noir...nobody can touch Burke in the lyrical expression of howling grief." — The New York Times Book Review

Judgment Call (Joanna Brady Series #14) By J. A. Jance $25.99
When her daughter, Jenny, stumbles across the body of her high school principal, Cochise County Sheriff Joanna Brady's personal and professional worlds collide, putting her in the difficult middle ground between being an officer of the law and a mother. While investigating murders means discovering unpleasant facts, Joanna isn't prepared for the knowledge she's about to uncover. Though she's tried to protect her children from the dangers of the grown-up world, the search for justice leads straight to her own door and forces her to face the possibility that her beloved daughter may be less perfect than she seems—especially when a photo from the crime scene ends up on Facebook. A photo only one person close to the crime scene could have taken.
For Joanna, the line between justice and family has never been so blurred . . . and never so close.
"Jance smoothly intertwines the threads of multiple subplots, complete with a red herring or two." — Publishers Weekly

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain $26.00
At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society—from van Gogh's sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer.
Passionately argued, impressively researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so. Taking the reader on a journey from Dale Carnegie's birthplace to Harvard Business School, from a Tony Robbins seminar to an evangelical megachurch, Susan Cain charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal in the twentieth century and explores its far-reaching effects. She talks to Asian-American students who feel alienated from the brash, backslapping atmosphere of American schools. She questions the dominant values of American business culture, where forced collaboration can stand in the way of innovation, and where the leadership potential of introverts is often overlooked. And she draws on cutting-edge research in psychology and neuroscience to reveal the surprising differences between extroverts and introverts.
Perhaps most inspiring, she introduces us to successful introverts—from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Finally, she offers invaluable advice on everything from how to better negotiate differences in introvert-extrovert relationships to how to empower an introverted child to when it makes sense to be a "pretend extrovert."
This extraordinary book has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how introverts see themselves.
"Cain consistently holds the reader's interest by presenting individual profiles, looking at places dominated by extroverts and introverts, and reporting on the latest studies. Her diligence, research, and passion for this important topic has richly paid off." — Publishers Weekly
"This book is a pleasure to read and will make introverts and extroverts alike think twice about the best ways to be themselves and interact with differing personality types." — Library Journal
"The author's insights are so rich that she could pen two separate books: one about parenting an introverted child, and another about how to make an introvert/extrovert relationship work. An intriguing and potentially life-altering examination of the human psyche that is sure to benefit both introverts and extroverts alike." — Kirkus Reviews

Eat and Run: My Unlikely Journey to Ultramarathon Greatness By Scott Jurek $26.00
For nearly two decades, Scott Jurek has been a dominant force—and darling—in the grueling and growing sport of ultrarunning. In 1999, a complete unknown, he took the lead in the Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile jaunt over the Gold Rush trails of the Sierra Nevada. He went on to win that race seven years in a row. Jurek was also one of the elite runners who traveled to Mexico to run with the Tarahumara Indians, as profiled in the bestseller Born to Run. Jurek's accomplishments are nothing short of extraordinary—and all achieved on a plant-based diet.
In Eat and Run, Jurek opens up about his life and career—as an elite athlete and a vegan—and inspires runners at every level. From his midwestern childhood of hunting and fishing to his slow transition to ultrarunning and veganism to his epic, record-breaking races, Jurek's story shows the power of an iron will and the importance of thinking of food as fuel. Full of stories of endurance and competition as well as practical advice and some of his original recipes, Eat and Run will motivate people to go the distance, whether that means getting out for a first run, expanding food horizons, or simply exploring the limits of human potential.
"Accessible and riveting, Jurek's book makes the task of self-transformation look effortless..." — Publishers Weekly
"...Jurek has come to recognize that "a plate filled with guacamole and dinosaur kale will not deliver anyone from sorrow" and that achieving goals is often less important than striving toward them. ...readers will be rewarded with lessons about persistence and the joy of running." — Kirkus Reviews

Should he leave something tasty in return? With the help of Will Hillenbrand's endearing illustrations, the inimitable Daniel Pinkwater spins a charming little mystery about unexpected kindnesses and finding that extra-special someone.
