The Grass Keeps Getting Greener
Summertime brings sunshine, sandals, and ... yard waste! Can't burn it ... hate to pay good money just to clog our landfill with it ... so what the heck do we do with it? Learn more at a joint LIFE2 / City of Leavenworth "Town Hall" presentation.
Tuesday, June 15
"Town Hall" Presentation begins at 7:00 PM
(General LIFE2 meeting begins at 6:30 PM)
Barn Beach Reserve
Now that all Washington cities have a ban on burning inside the city limits, what is the best way to deal with yard waste? To help you answer this question, the City of Leavenworth, in cooperation with LIFE2 For a More Sustainable Leavenworth, will hold a "Town Hall" meeting.
Chelan County is in the process of converting dump fees to a per-weight basis. During the summer months, grass clippings, tree trimmings, etc., constitute a substantial, and relatively heavy, proportion of residential garbage. But yard waste is not hazardous and doesn't need to go to expensive PVC-lined landfills. If it could be chipped or composted instead, we would all benefit, keeping dump fees down and saving valuable landfill space.
This meeting will provide an opportunity for residents to learn about composting options, and provide feedback to the City. Contact Barn Beach Reserve at (509) 548-0181, www.barnbeachreserve.org.
For more great composting resources, try Let It Rot! The Gardener's Guide to Composting by Stu Campbell ($12.95). "Local governments should make everybody who still puts out leaves or grass on the curb read this and follow the simple advice," says the Washington Times. That bag of yard-waste isn't garbage - it's soil-nourishing gardener's gold! Learn the complete "how-to" of composting here, from three-pile to pit-and-trench, biodynamic to sheet composting, green manure to worm bins.

Are you thinking "hoo boy, I just don't need any more yard work?" Then the book for you is How to Cheat at Gardening and Yard Work: Shameless tricks for growing radically simple flowers, veggies, lawns, landscaping and more by Jeff Bredenberg ($18.95). The chapter "The World's Easiest Composting" shows you the simplest, least expensive, most-hassle free methods, and how to select the right one, whether for a sprawling yard or a yard-less apartment. Full of re-assurance for beginners and tips to keep it fool-proof, typical section headings are: "make it convenient" and "compost the lazy way." A Rodale Organic Gardening Book.

Fiction
Anthill by Edward O. Wilson $24.95 (hardcover)
Winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, the Carl Sagan Award, and many other honors for his scientific biology writing, which includes The Diversity of Life, Harvard entomology professor Wilson has just released his first work of fiction, a creative coming-of-age novel. Anthill follows the thrilling adventures of Raff, a modern-day Huck Finn, whose improbable love of the strange, beautiful, and elegant world of ants ends up transforming his own life and the citizens of Nokobee County. Astonishing, inspirational, even magical: a naturalist's novel about an Alabama boy's battle to save a sacred forest.
Battling snakes bites and cynical relatives who don't understand his consuming fascination with the outdoors, Raff explores the pristine beauty of the Nokobee wildland. In doing so, he witnesses the remarkable creation and destruction of four separate ant colonies, whose histories are epics that unfold on picnic grounds; and he becomes a young naturalist in the process.
At Florida State University, Raff, chooses law over science, believing that the environmental fight must be waged in the courtroom as well as the lab. Returning home a legal gladiator, Raff grows increasingly alarmed by rapacious condo developers. One last battle awaits him.
In an unforgettable climax, Raff encounters the angry and corrupt ghosts of an old South he thought had all but disappeared, and learns that war is a genetic imperative, not only for ants but for men as well. Part thriller, part parable, Anthill will not only transfix readers with its stunning twists and startling revelations, but will provide readers with new insights into the meaning of survival in our rapidly changing world.
Praise
" Lush with organic details, Wilson's keen eye for the natural world and his acumen for environmental science is on brilliant display in this multifaceted story about human life and its connection to nature." — Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)
"Wilson's foray into fiction allows him to write more expressively, psychologically, even spiritually about the great web of life, humankind included, and the irrefutable rules for ecological survival. Fiction grants him the freedom to imagine an inspiring hero who finds a way forward through the labyrinth of environmental conundrums. Drawing on the great classics of Southern literature, Wilson hopes to emulate what Harper Lee did for civil rights in To Kill a Mockingbird by dramatizing the urgent need for justice on the environmental front." — Chicago Tribune

Mennonite in a Little Black Dress: A Memoir of Going Home By Rhoda Janzen $14.00
Not long after Rhoda Janzen turned forty, her world turned upside down. It was bad enough that her husband of fifteen years left her for Bob, a guy he met on Gay.com, but that same week a car accident left her with serious injuries. Needing a place to rest and pick up the pieces of her life, Rhoda packed her bags, crossed the country, and returned to her quirky Mennonite family's home, where she was welcomed with open arms and offbeat advice. (Rhoda's good-natured mother suggested she date her first cousin--he owned a tractor, see.)
Written with wry humor and huge personality--and tackling faith, love, family, and aging—Mennonite in a Little Black Dress is an immensely moving memoir of healing, certain to touch anyone who has ever had to look homeward in order to move ahead.

"Hilarious and touching" — People (four stars)
"A spirited, fascinating memoir ... Janzen's story reminds us what a beautiful gift our past can be." — The Miami Herald

Brainstorm: Harnessing the Power of Productive Obsessions by Eric and Ann Maisel $14.95
A mind is a terrible thing to waste. And obsessions can do that to us: when we spend our weekend—and neurons—reliving a workplace squabble, when we spend a family visit chewing over childhood issues, or when we spend hours beating ourselves up over long-ago by-passed opportunities. This kind of obsessing gets us, like a hamster on a wheel, nowhere.
But as noted creativity expert Eric Maisel asserts, obsessing "productively" leads to fulfillment rather than frustration. A productive obsession, whether an idea for a novel, a business, or a vaccine, is chosen deliberately and pursued with determination. In this provocative, practical guide, Maisel coaches you to use the tendency to obsess to your creative advantage, fulfilling both your promise and your promises to yourself.
