anniversary of the prize, the Man
Booker committee is taking a look at
the past 41 winners and selecting
The
Best of the Bookers.
Wondering why there are 41 winners?
In 1974, two books shared the prize,
Stanley Middleton's Holiday
and Nadine Gordimer's The
Conservationist. This occurred
again in 1992 when Michael Ondaatje's
English Patient shared the
prize with Barry Unsworth's Sacred
Hunger.

Check out the
The Booker Prize Online for
information on the prize, the judges,
the past winners and the 40th
anniversary. You can even weigh in on

BOOK REVIEW
Lilly-Anne Wilder Reviews:
Gods Behaving Badly:A Novel
by Marie Phillips

Yes, the Greek gods have survived
the twenty-first century, though
not in the lap of luxury atop
Olympus as you would expect. They
are crammed into a dilapidated
London town house, their powers
waning and forced to take on blue
collar day jobs to keep above the
poverty level. Artemis walks dogs,
Aphrodite is a phone-sex operator,
Dionysus is a DJ in a nightclub
and Apollo is a cable channel
psychic. Needless to say, none of
the gods are happy with their
current predicament and to relieve
their tension, they play cruel
little tricks on each other. Two
faint-hearted mortals, Neal and
Alice, become implements in the
gods' antics, resulting in a
hilariously wacky fable of
clueless gods and unlikely
heroism. Full of that dry British
humor, I was laughing with every
turn of the page.

Food, Glorious Food!
Lisa Wells reviews:
Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker
Recipes for Two
by best-selling James Beard
Award-winning Author Beth
Hensperger

When I think of my Mother's
cooking, I think of big Sunday
dinners with lots of food and all
of the food groups represented.
Now granted, we didn't eat this
way every day, but even when
eating mid-week fare and
casseroles, Mom's cooking was
always top-notch and there was
always plenty to go around.
As you may gather from the title,
this cookbook recognizes the fact
that even though some people may
have smaller households, they
still want a flavorful yet
convenient meal! Pick up and thumb
through this book and you'll
instantly see that finding flavor
won't be a problem here!
I remember when the Slow Cooker
first came onto the scene in the
early 70's. A few years later when
I married I wanted my own so badly
that I asked everyone I knew for
one and ended up with two or three
for Christmas. It's an innovation
that I'll never be without. This
great book by Beth Hensperger is
designed for small slow cookers.
Those old, tired and dated
crock-pot recipes are a thing of
the past as this book brings
flavorful and versatile meals to
the small household. Individual
Pot Roasts, Chipotle Black Bean
Vegetable Soup, Moroccan-Spiced
Tomato Chicken with Almonds, Osso
Buco with Fennel, Capers and Lime,
Turkey Chili with Baby White
Beans, Butternut Squash Soup -
these recipes are full of flavor
and originality.
Whether you have a small household
yourself, have a Mom that no
longer has a household full of
kids anymore, or even if you have
a son or daughter going off to
college, this book is a winner
(and would be a great gift
idea!).

Book Camp is
Coming!
Every summer since 2002, the outside
balcony of A Book for All Seasons has
been transformed. There was a
wordplay cafe filled with
serendipitous language collisions and
a whole lot of gobblefunking in 2007
with Roald Dahl and The BFG
and in 2006 it became a laboratory
filled with mad scientists and
bubbling potions. In 2005 it became a
place for odd characters read out of
books and in 2004, a ship, complete
with brig and a crew of crafty
rascals. In 2003, an 'unfortunate
place' and a princess' sitting room
and our first year, in 2002, a
sisterhood gathering porch, covered
with pants.
2008 promises to be as zany as ever
with Poe Camp on the horizon.
The final details are to remain a
mystery (we can't
give away all of our secrets, now can
we?), but we can tell you that
it's a camp full of
imagining, eating, writing, crafting,
imagining, learning, reading,
laughing, and more imagining!
There is still space available, but
don't delay - Camp slots often fill
up and waiting lists start early!

A Verse From a Poetic
Mind
An Excerpt from Mother - A
Cradle to Hold Me
by Maya Angelou
During the years when you knew
nothing
And I knew everything, I loved you
still.
Condescendingly of course,
From my high perch
Of teenage wisdom.
I grew older and
Was stunned to find
How much knowledge you had
gleaned,
And so quickly.
Mother I have learned enough
now
To know I have learned nearly
nothing.
On this day
When mothers are being
honored,
Let me thank you
That my selfishness, ignorance,
and mockery
Did not bring you to
Discard me like a broken doll
Which had lost its favor.
I thank you that
You still find something in me
To cherish, to admire, and to
love.
I thank you, Mother.
I love you.

Excerpt from Mother - A Cradle
To Hold Me by renowned poet
and national treasure Maya Angelou.
In this lovely little hardcover book,
Angelou celebrates the first woman we
ever knew in an awe-inspiring
affirmation of the enduring love that
exists in every corner of the
globe.

A Passage from Mother
Nature
Listening to Cougar by
Marc Bekoff and Cara Blessley
Lowe, Editors
Foreword by Jane Goodall
I glance ahead to detect a path
and begin putting one foot behind
the other, almost walking
sideways. Reluctant to turn my
back on her, I take slow measured
steps toward the cabin, which is
at least a hundred yards down the
ridgeline, carrying my stick. I
try not to step on noisy things or
make sudden movements, as if that
actually matters. Twenty yards, I
stop, turn. She pauses, mid-step,
the distance between us unchanged.
I hope this qualifies as a
socially acceptable distance.
Cougars can easily leap the
distance that separates us now.

Excerpt from
the story "Talking with a Cougar"
by Julia B. Corbett
From the book Listening to
Cougar by Marc Bekoff and Cara
Blessley Lowe, Editors
Foreword by Jane Goodall
This spellbinding tribute
to Puma concolor, the cat
of one color.
Short stories and essays consider
cougar's significance to people,
reflecting on accidental
encounters, dreams, Navajo
beliefs, guided hunts, and how
vital mountain lions are to people
as symbols of power and wildness.
Though some works evoke cougars
indirectly, in some essays, the
puma appears front and center: a
cougar leaps over Rick Bass's
feet, hurtles off a cliff in front
of J. Frank Dobie, gazes at Julie
Orbett when she opens her eyes
after an outdoor meditation,
emerges from the fog close enough
for poet Gary Gildner to touch.
Marc Beckoff even opens his car
door that turns out to be a
cougar.

Firefly
Lane by Kristin Hannah
Firefly Lane is for anyone
who ever drank Boone's Farm apple
wine while listening to Abba or
Fleetwood Mac. More than a
coming-of-age novel, it's the
story of a generation of women who
were both blessed and cursed by
choices. It's about promises and
secrets and betrayals. And
ultimately, about the one person
who really, truly knows you - and
knows what has the power to hurt

A New Earth:
Awakening to Your Life's
Purpose by Eckhart
Tolle
Humanity now, perhaps more than in
any previous time, has an
opportunity to create a new,
saner, more loving world. In very
practical terms, Tolle leads
readers into this new
consciousness to learn to live and
breathe freely with this highly
anticipated follow-up to the
2,000,000 copy bestselling
inspirational book, The Power
of Now.
In The Power of Now,
Eckhart Tolle inspired millions of
readers to discover the freedom
and joy of a life lived in the
now. In A New Earth, Tolle
expands on these powerful ideas to
show how transcending our
ego-based state of consciousness
is not only essential to personal
happiness, but also the key to
ending conflict and suffering
throughout the world. Tolle
describes how our attachment to
the ego creates the dysfunction
that leads to anger, jealousy, and
unhappiness, and shows readers how
to awaken to a new state of
consciousness and follow the path
to a truly fulfilling
existence.

The White Cascade:
The Great Northern Railway
Disaster and America's Deadliest
Avalanche by Gary
Krist
In February 1910, a monstrous,
record-breaking blizzard hit the
Northwest. Nowhere was the danger
more terrifying than near a tiny
town called Wellington, perched
high in the Cascade Mountains,
where a desperate situation
evolved: two trainloads of cold,
hungry passengers and their crews
found themselves marooned. For
days, an army of the Great
Northern Railroad's most dedicated
men worked to rescue the trains,
but just when escape seemed
possible, the unthinkable occurred
- a colossal avalanche tumbled
down, sweeping the trains over the
steep slope and down the
mountainside. Centered on the
astonishing spectacle of our
nation's deadliest avalanche,
The White Cascade is the
masterfully told story of a
never-before-documented
tragedy.

Eat, Pray,
Love by Elizabeth
Gilbert
When Elizabeth Gilbert was around
thirty, she had everything an
educated, ambitious American woman
was supposed to want - a husband,
a house, a successful career. But
instead of feeling happy and
fulfilled, she was consumed with
panic, grief, and confusion. She
went through a divorce, a crushing
depression, another failed love,
and the eradication of everything
she ever thought she was supposed
to be. To recover, Gilbert took a
radical step. She got rid of her
belongings, quit her job, and
undertook a yearlong journey
around the world - all alone.
Eat, Pray, Love is the
absorbing chronicle of that year.
Her aim was to visit three places
where she could examine one aspect
of her own nature set against the
backdrop of a culture that has
traditionally done that one thing
very well. In Rome, she studied
the art of pleasure, learning to
speak Italian and gaining the
twenty-three happiest pounds of
her life. India was for the art of
devotion, with four uninterrupted
months of spiritual exploration.
In Bali, she studied the art of
balance between worldly enjoyment
and divine transcendence. An
intensely articulate and moving
memoir of self-discovery, Eat,
Pray, Love is about what can
happen when you claim
responsibility for your own
contentment and stop trying to
live in imitation of society's
ideals. It is certain to touch
anyone who has ever woken up to
the unrelenting need for
change.

Pat's Corner
Fresh back from vacation a customer
commented on my pasty white
complexion and asked if the weather
had been bad. "No, I just can't be
out in the sun without sunscreen," I
confessed, "but the weather was
fantastic. Sun every day, the ocean
laid out before us, begging us to
jump in. No, Mexico was wonderful," I
assured her." "So where's your tan?"
That was yesterday. Today, thanks to
a bottle of fake tan, I look like I
should, coming back from three weeks
in the sun.
So how was our vacation?
No Montezuma's revenge, no problems
driving down and back, except the one
time we were stopped for speeding.
The officer said that we would have
to appear in court the next day to
pay a $50 fine. We attempted to
explain with our limited vocabulary
and a lot of sign language that we
wouldn't be able to make
it into court the next day. He was
very accommodating and suggested we
pay whatever we wanted right then and
there and we happily handed over $20
and were on our way.
Our hosts at the resort kept
encouraging us to "Relaxo" and once I
heeded their advice I slipped into
another world, devoid of
technological accoutrements.
So what if my PDA disobeyed my
frantic commands to stop downloading
hundreds of emails at a still
unknown, but I am sure, exorbitant
cost. So what if the WIFI at our
hotel was down most of the time and I
couldn't get on the
internet to check on this or that. So
what if my new digital camera in
which I had invested much time and
energy capturing just the right shots
of sons and daughter,
daughters-in-law, grandchildren,
husband and significant others at
play, went haywire and erased all my
photos not once but twice. And so
what if it was really operator
error!
Once I settled into Mexican time, I
started to really enjoy myself. I
pulled out my stash of books and lost
myself in story. I played in the pool
with the kids, drank Pina Coladas
with the bigger kids, took long walks
on the beach, ate a healthy cuisine
of seafood, fresh veggies and fruits
and of course, bushels of fresh
avocadoes in the form of
guacamole.
All three of the books I read were
wonderful, in their own right.
Dreamers of the Day by Mary
Doria Russell, has helped me
understand the current situation in
the Middle East through a gracefully
told story, which illuminates the
rich history of the region.
The Reserve by Russell Banks
is part mystery, part love story, set
in the Adirondack wilderness during
the 1930's and addresses questions of
class, politics, art, love and
madness.
And The Plague of Doves by
Louise Erdrich was so compelling, I
stayed up all night, the rhythm of
the surf encouraging me to read yet
another page and then another and
another.
On the long drive home, Ed and I
listened to Freddy and
Fredericka by Mark Helprin. At
times a hilarious fairytale of an
English royal family, it also
eulogizes the greatness of the
American landscape and people,
helping me to look with fresh eyes on
the grandeur of the country rolling
by; the muddy Mississippi, the
vastness of desert, the majesty of
mountains.
It was a great vacation, yet I am
happy to be back in my own little
corner of the world; technology not
withstanding.
