Resilience, Family, and Coming of Age. Local author Patricia Nikolina Clark shares her latest compelling and uplifting young adult fiction, Fisherman's Daughter.
From the lives of pioneer families who settled shoreline coves and fished the waters of Tomales Bay comes the tender story of eleven-year-old Katia, her papa, uncles, brothers, and baby sister. Struggling to cope with the loss of her mother, Katia finds comfort in reading and spends her time writing poetry and dreaming of becoming a teacher. But when told she must leave school to care for the family, Katia rebels. She turns to her teacher—the only person Katia believes can help make dreams come true.
"Clark has done it again. I wish her appealing story of Katia had been available for my girls... this book is simply outstanding." — Bruce L. Foxworthy, author of Making Do and Hanging On: Growing Up in Apple Country Through the Great Depression
"the small cove in Fisherman's Daughter, now preserved within Point Reyes National Seashore, is a lovely place... Written with loving care, Clark's dramatic tale of a young girl's life ... brings the spirit of this isolated beach to life for me." — Dewey Livingston, Marin County Historian and Curator of Jack Mason Museum

 Reconciliation: A Son's Story, by Steve Sparks - $13.99
Begun as a gift to the author's own family, this heartfelt exploration of growing up in a family coping with a father's PTSD will be a profound gift to many American families today.
In his ground-breaking memoir, "Reconciliation: A Son's Story", Sparks reflects back on his father's war time experiences as the context underlying the family’s difficult dynamics. Advances in the understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) allow Sparks to reconcile with his father in a new way—as a mentally wounded returned soldier. And with this new understanding comes healing.
Says Sparks: "I owe my success in part to my Dad, but not without a high price. I call this 'collateral damage' from living in a family culture affected by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder... My Dad was no different than thousands of veterans with similar symptoms... The children and wives and others close to these men would have to experiment and learn how to navigate our way through a terrible circumstance... the effects of PTSD carry forward…”
This timely story of understanding, healing and reconciliation may help the thousands of families of veterans of our current generation come to terms with PTSD and its effect on entire families.

Politics of the Possible by Mary Ellen McCaffree and Anne McNamee Corbett — $22.95
Resourcefulness: how an ordinary housewife rolled up her sleeves, entered the political arena, and made it work on her terms. "It's your turn," Mary Ellen McCaffree tells her grandchildren now. "Our government is us."
Politics of the Possible, a lively journey through one dynamic decade, proves our political system really can function as our founders designed. Mary Ellen McCaffree and Anne McNamee Corbett take us inside a movement led by moderates—fledgling politicians and citizens alike—who said 'Our government isn't working for us!' then rolled up their sleeves, joined the process and made a difference.
Politics of the Possible de-mystifies the gears of governing and strips the political process bare. It gives today's citizens tools to engage: to effectively prod, lead and legislate change. As Mary Ellen tells her grandchildren, when we understand our governmental process, we can assure it works. The caliber of our government—its integrity, its relevance, how well it responds to our needs—is up to us.
"This book allows the reader to look over the shoulder of a legislator both publicly and behind the scenes. Even the press never gets access this far inside the political process. Politics of the Possible is 'must' reading for anyone interested in how government works—and that should be all of us." — Daniel J. Evans, Former Three-Term Governor, U.S. Senator and Four-Term Legislator, State of Washington
"A local story with national implications and tremendous contemporary instructive power. A rare book on lawmaking that both informs and entertains. An impressive combination." — Dr. Jerald Podair, Professor of American Studies, Lawrence University, Wisconsin
"A magnificent masterpiece... clearly the best history of its kind I've ever read." — Slade Gorton, Former Three-Term U.S Senator, Three-Term Attorney General and Five-Term State Representative, State of Washington
Mary Ellen McCaffree entered political life when she took up the cause of her children's overcrowded and under-funded schools. This led the 1950's housewife into work on two statewide redistricting initiatives, four terms as a state legislator, and authorship or other significant involvement in: a comprehensive package of tax reform, community college establishment, youth voting rights, shoreline management, and groundbreaking environmental protections. The first female Director of the Washington State Department of Revenue, she also served as King County budget director and as administrative assistant to a U.S. Senator. Upon retiring from public life she continued to serve on many local, state and national commissions, committees and boards. She has a degree in Home Economics and has been married 69 years to Dr. Kenneth McCaffree, Professor Emeritus of Economics, her high school sweetheart. The couple has 5 children, 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and counting. A lifelong gardener, Mary Ellen says: "You never retire—you just repot and keep growing."
Co-author Anne McNamee Corbett has a degree in journalism from the University of Washington, and has worked in the Senate Office of Public Information. She is the founding editor of a weekly community newspaper, co-creator of an annual trade magazine, and co-founder of a community land trust.
