Bird Fest keynote speaker and award-winning photographer Paul Bannick will take you on a stunning visual journey, derived from thousands of hours in the field. Paul will explore how owls and woodpeckers define and enrich their habitat, and how their life-histories are intertwined.
Award winning photographer Paul Bannick specializes in the natural history of North America, with a special focus on his beloved Pacific Northwest. Paul couples his love of the outdoors with his skill as a photographer to foster intimacy between the viewer and subject of his photographs, inspiring education and conservation.
An experienced naturalist and outdoor educator, Paul creates most of his images while kayaking, hiking or snowshoeing in the Pacific Northwest. His work has appeared in Audubon magazine, Sunset magazine, Pacific Northwest magazine, the National Wildlife Federation Guide to North American Birds, Smithsonian Guide to North American Birds and in many other books, magazines, parks, refuges and other places in North America and Europe.
Paul works full-time as a director for Conservation Northwest, a conservation organization dedicated to protecting and connecting wild areas from the Pacific Coast to the Canadian Rockies.
Paul's stunning new book, The Owl and The Woodpecker: Encounters with North America's Most Iconic Birds, is based on thousands of hours in the field photographing these fascinating and wily birds. This book illuminates their natural rhythms, habits, and habitats, as well as the integral spirit of our wild places. An in-depth and comprehensive look at two of our most iconic—and important—bird families. Great for photography lovers, conservationists, and backyard enthusiasts alike.
Every wild place and urban area in North America hosts an owl or a woodpecker species, while healthy natural places often boast representatives of both. The diversity of these two families of birds, and the ways in which they define and enrich the ecosystems they inhabit, are the subject of this vivid new book by photographer and naturalist Paul Bannick. Bannick evokes all 41 North American species of owls and woodpeckers, across 11 key habitats. And by revealing the impact of two of our most iconic birds, Bannick has created a wholly unique approach to birding and conservation. Includes an audio CD with calls and drumming.
